I’ve been a huge Beach Boys fan since hearing “Surfin’” on the radio in 1961. Yes, I’m that old. Bought every single one of their albums as soon as they were released. Still do. Used paper route money to pay for them up until 1967, after which I taught guitar lessons while in High School, then worked part time in college, and was a computer software engineer for 45 years, while also writing songs, recording and performing in coffee houses and restaurants most of that time. Also used to slip away from work during my lunch hour to go boogie boarding every day during the summer at Manhattan Beach, California. Lived in Redondo Beach, but also for four years in Hawthorne, California. I recently retired in Washington State. I once wrote a song about Brian Wilson, and recorded it with four part harmony, and gave Brian a copy at his book signing for “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” but I never heard back from him. Never expected to, actually. I recently discovered this forum, so I thought I’d join up. I do tend toward the sarcastic side of humor. Also love The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, The Association, Frank Sinatra, Don Ellis - really hundreds of artists, too many to list.

Boogieboarder, welcome to the Endless Harmony message board! I'm a West Coaster too, born and raised in Northern Cali and settling in the S.F. Bay Area. Sounds like you've been around the block (and the beach) a few times and we like having that music experience around here. We're glad you're with us!

I did move to Santa Cruz for ten years in between Redondo Beach and Washington State. It seems my wife and I are moving further north with each jump.

Now up to almost 500 posts and still no welcoming word from me? Fixed that.
More oldsters needed. I was born in '52, you do the math. Trying to forget all about how much a pain getting old is. Worth it enough, tho. Growing up with The Beach Boys was special. Growing up in their great years as they played out, before all the arguing began in the late-'70s can't be bettered by getting every track plus the boots all dumped on you at one time. I had to back-track a bit after getting Shut Down in Summer '63, but by 1964 the experience was as each one came out. I really think that makes a difference.
I must have heard "Surfin'", but didn't become a fan until 1963, not a real fan. It all got better and better until my magic year 1965.

I think there are more older folks here at EHF than any forum I've been on before. And that's great! I enjoy reading personal experiences stories. I lived in Northern California for about half my life, I'm from Louisiana. I left there soon as I got out of High School in 1970. I grew very tired of the droughts and if you've been there all your life can remember when the fires were only down in the Southern areas of the State. Funny story: When I first came to California it was to see L.A., and with hopes of seeing The Beach Boys. That was late 1970. I was riding in a car moving slowly down the freeway when I noticed small fires here and there on the hill sides. The driver, who had lived there all his life, said, "oh, that's normal, they can be easily kept under control." "Really?", was my reply. I ended up in the Santa Cruz area for a few years, in Brookdale and Felton. Occasional fires in Big Sur, but not really a big deal in Santa Cruz. Then I moved to San Francisco in 1978. By 1988 I was a gardener/landscaper. Drought meant you couldn't water your lawn (grass needs more water than anything), they even shut the fountains off. Then the fires began to come up north. The 1970 story was funny, but this wasn't. By the mid-'90s I was hearing about fires on Mt. Tam! It took me a few years to save enough money to do it, but I didn't want to live my retirement years in a fire zone. For the last twenty-something years I've lived in upstate New York. I can't believe how fires have taken over California, and have moved east all the way to Colorado. It must be very hard to deal with. I visited and had friends that lived in towns that are completely gone now...

My brother got evacuated last year, but luckily the fire didn't reach his house. It doesn't seem like it's going to get any better, only worse!
