Much maligned by critics and fans alike at the time of it's release in 1992, it's reputation has improved ever so slightly in recent years. Attachments:

4/10, and I'm actually tempted to rank it higher. I really don't think it's the total piece of garbage that some fans make it out to be. I do think it's the weakest album in the catalog, narrowly beating out Love You for that title.
But, the production is awful. The dabbling in rap music is downright embarrassing. And the covers of Under the Boardwalk with new lyrics and Remember Walking in the Sand all drag the album down for me.
Also, as I've posted before, there are 8 pretty good tracks (which is actually more than I can say for Smiley Smile and Love You), but no real standout track IMO. The title track comes the closest, but I think the live version is ten times better than the studio cut, which is oddly buried on the back end of the album.

3/10. It’s not a good album by any means, but there are a few tracks that I genuinely enjoy, like “Still Surfin’”.

I ranked it a 6. I actually like the most of the songs & I enjoy the vocals. My main issue is mostly with production or I would even rank it higher.

An unmitigated disaster that completely tarnished whatever was left of the respect their name commanded. Terrible, cringe-inducing lyrics and bland melodies.
Stamos' Forever isn't unsalvageable but it's not good either. It feels like a half-assed attempt to jump on the power ballad train that was big in the 90s.
I've heard people praise the cover but I hate that too. It's too busy and too tacky, it looks like an Eyewitness Science video. An old educational VHS tape they break out in 5th grade biology lessons.

Yes indeed. The dolphin is wasted in such dumb cover.

I have given this album more than a few listens, both the US and UK versions, and every time I listen to it, I have to take a break from listening to the Beach Boys for a while. It is terrible. All of it. The best song "Strange Things Happen" is still so weak of a song in the entire catalog and for the UK version, they cut out a significant portion of the ending. "Forever" remake is sacrilegious. This album made me hate Terry Melcher productions post 1960's. Both versions have a nice cover though.
1 out of 10, the lowest I can give a Beach Boys album. I feel the same about Still Cruisin' as well which I made myself listen to recently. This may seem controversial but I wish the BBs never recorded an album or any of those crappy singles between 1981 and 2012 with the exception of the song "Chasin' The Sky" despite the apostrophe in the title. Did they really think it was that cool to name songs without the ending consonant?

Lahaina Aloha. Some of Carl's last vocals. The material is not bad. It is the canned electronic effects that most seem to object to. I played it - a lot. I don't get all the hate. Gave it a 7.

3.5. Occasionally it's redeemed by some greatness, like Strange Things Happen and Lahaina Aloha, but it also contains some of their most embarrassing stuff. Imagine an entire album with the quality of Strange Things Happen...what a waste that no other song here was as great.

All I have to say about this one is, this is the absolute worst Beach Boys album by a long long way. Not a good song on here, the only not terrible songs are Strange Things Happen, Lahania Aloha and Hot Fun in The Summertime. Summer Of Love is hands down the worst Beach Boys song ever recorded, just absolute rubbish and Surfin is shockingly bad, Remember Walking In The Sand actually made me laugh when I first heard it. The whole album is an embarrassment.
Track Ratings
1. Hot Fun In The Summertime 4/10 2. Surfin 1/10 3. Summer Of Love 0/10 4. Island Fever 2/10 5. Still Surfin 3/10 6. Slow Summer Dancing 3/10 7. Strange Things Happen 4/10 8. Remember Walking In The Sand 1/10 9. Lahaina Aloha 4/10 10. Under The Boardwalk 2/10 11. Summer In Paradise 3/10 12. Forever 4/10
Forever only gets a 4 cause of the lyrics

The Beach Boys thought enough of this album to exclude it from their official discography during CELEBRATION 50 in 2012. Is it out of print today? Let's hope so. Bought this on cassette in 1992...copy is long gone. The worst album ever released by a major rock group.

Not that anyone says it's a good album, but plenty of people have said they like anywhere from a quarter to half the album. I'm one of them as there are some solid songs on it. Strange Things Happen, Lahaina Aloha, Slow Summer Dancin', and Hot Fun in the Summertime are what I like the most.

Perhaps the passage of time allows a newer fan to judge SIP outside its original context. In 1992, SIP seemed the last straw, Mike Love at his post-Kokomo worst, with the others more or less giving up. And no Brian. In 2020 SIP could be viewed as another late period album w/ some redeeming features.

That was pretty good! I love the inclusion of Like a Brother - a lot. I might swap out a couple of the Brian tracks, maybe from That Lucky Old Sun, (I Love Southern California, because it is their story) and there is plenty from which to choose. If there was only a way to swap out the tinny drums - the rest would be perfect. It sounded great in the 90s (to me - and I played it a lot) but now something more mellow would be great. I enjoyed it a lot - thanks so much for your work! Better to light a candle, than curse the darkness! Bravo!

Yea I just wanted some Brian on there, unfortunately his material around that time was not the greatest, I just thought the theme of Do You Have Any Regrets and it sounding kinda islandy suited the album, Rainbow Eyes not so much

Should have been called "Kokomo: The Album". I actually *did* kind of like the album at the time as I was just getting into the band and welcomed hearing anything from the group. How I didn't run screaming from the band after hearing this I'll never know. 🤣
In all honesty I don't actually mind "Island Fever" (the first version) all that much as it serves as a sorta sequel to "Kokomo", but this is simply an objectively bad album all around. Any of this history revision that this album isn't *that* terrible is simply delusional. So glad this didn't end up being the group's swan song.

Kokomo should have been on that album, and the name/title, in addition to Still Cruisin’ which was kind of a happy mess of a mish-mash. In real time - it was not delusional. It needs a re-do with real live session percussion and not from a computer.
