Finished up my first new set of recordings in a few years- a minimalistic “1960s songwriter demo” album called Dandelions. This was recorded all analog into a 1966 Ampex 602 suitcase recorder, on NOS tape. Album release on June 29 (cassette and download); First promo clip is here: Album info here: magichero.bandcamp.comLet me know what you folks think!

What a fascinating concept. And some compelling songs. Thanks for sharing! I hope folks will find their way to this lonely part of the forum and give the tracks a listen. (The Bandcamp page linked in the opening post is illuminating.)
Good luck with the album!

Great 'sound' there Donny. Can you elaborate more on the Ampex 602 and the tape you used? Is it yours, where did it come from, condition... What was your recording process, and signal chain? mics you used? Do you have any great home video of the 'making of' process? Love me some analog Man.

Hi Rick, Thanks for the questions and compliments! For this album, it was very very simple- probably in a way that most would not expect: After years of owning many larger decks- including the original 1966 Ampex AG-300 8-track from Sunset Sound (yes, the same machine that recorded some BB tracks and Love Forever Changes, etc), I sold off everything and went to a minimal setup more recently ... though you can find some older tracks cut on that Sunset Sound 8-track in my record label link in my signature and Bandcamp site. So for this one, I got a mono (full-track) suitcase Ampex 602, and had it refurbed by a father/son team out of Los Angeles called History of Recorded Sound. Once the deck was in working order, I paired it with NOS 1960s Scotch 203 tape (the formula I usually use). From there, I simply recorded directly into the machine via the onboard mike preamp with a single mike for guitar & vocal live. The mikes used were an AKG D202 "Soundrocket", a Shure 565, and an Electro-Voice RE16. For reverb and a little EQ, I used a Shure Vocal Master ('60s PA mixer), and an old UREI graphic EQ. That's literally it- just transferred to digital. No home videos here!

Been listening to your music for many years now. And enjoy your old "found" videos you use to put together the new videos. You get a very nice '60's sound. Good luck on going.
What happened to your group? Do you still play live gigs?

What happened to your group? Do you still play live gigs? Hi Will- thank you The group is more or less on pause/ a project I could begin again potentially though. Haven’t played live in a few years, but may get into doing that again. I’ve got my eye on a 12” vinyl release, but it’s in the very early planning … I would imagine playing live would be part of the ultimate release however.

You've really nailed a sound to die for, you have captured that 'lightning' thing in a bottle. What an amazing sound and a great sound to make 'acoustic' records. Ironically, and not surprising, you've practically used everything 'old school', which is still a nod of the cap to the original inventor's and pioneering engineers.... They really got it right first time round. I will be keeping an ear out with your material that's for sure! Cheers, Rick

Old thread so I had not noticed or previously heard your music before. Groovy tunes, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Nice sounds to kick back to with a glass of wine. Purchased downloads of both albums today. Good stuff!

I have tried digital recording briefly here and there, but it does not work for me. Even less expensive analog gear yields better results for me.
