I didn't want to start a whole thread for this, so I figured this might be the most suitable existing thread.
My wife and I went to The Fest For Beatles Fans this weekend. We saw a kid (couldn't have been more than 15) wearing a blue T-shirt with the Capitol Records Smile logo on it. My wife showed him her BWPS canvas bag she brought to carry stuff in and said, "Nice shirt!"

Is there any one particular Smile Sessions bootleg out there that includes a comprehensive version of all the tracks that have surfaced over the years on various boots, or is it still a situation where the listener needs to dig and cherry pick from multiple sources/boots? Do the unsurpassed masters get close? Hope I'm making sense here.

Who here would recommend the 4-disc Smile box to someone who has the GV box material, had Unsurpassed Masters 20 years ago, and generally loves the Smile work? Are there dozens of fascinating things?

I guess you’re referring to this 5 CD box set, right? I actually bought my copy just a couple of years ago and haven’t regretted it at all. It’s a stunning box set, beautifully designed with lots of interesting things to read, great photos and the music sounds fantastic. Mark and Alan really outdid themselves with this one (despite one or two odd mistakes). Probably the greatest box set ever released.

I think your best bet is checking the Beach Boys Discord.

Smile wouldn’t have been as much fun if everything was available all in one place, all at one time. I can’t imagine any other album that had such a reputation, and leaked in such dribs and drabs so often, with so many sessions, over so many decades. It’s a hobby all on its own.

This is the set with 5 cds and a couple LPs? Several hundred bucks on Amazon?

I found this image of Smile Sessions Merchandising from 2011, and I was curious, as I'd never seen it before. I was particularly interested in the book "The Smile Sessions Box Set and how Phil Cohen Got it Wrong" by Andrew Doe. I couldn't find the book available anywhere. I followed the links, and only at the very bottom did it say it was satire. I would have enjoyed actually having some of this merchandise. www.earcandymag.com/smilemerchandise-1211.htm

Not sure whether it’s still available or whether it’s been stamped on or what. 21 CDs-worth, though, which is a start, at least! And way back in the mists of time there was the 12 (?) CD Big Bag of Vegetables comp, which circulated (possibly as a download, not sure) among a very small number of real hardcore fans, most of whom had, I seem to recall, actually contributed tracks from their own private collections. Don’t know if that ever slipped out into the wider collectors’ world. Doubt it’ll ever all be on one place though… the second batch of Durrie Parks acetates for example remain under lock and key, it would seem.

You'd have to sell a kidney to afford all of that. I wonder if that was the box set with the blinking lights on the album cover. It's a shame that the physical box set (containing both the CD and vinyl copies) is currently out of print but considering the price of the thing alone it's not really all that surprising. I wonder if we'll ever get an official stereo mix of the album at some point.

Unbelievable that an unfinished studio album could have 21 CDs of sessions and outtakes, and still be considered incomplete - especially after it was initially rumored that the tapes were destroyed. Smile is truly unique in the annals of pop music.
