"[T]he most pressing problem has to do with the oceans, because they are the major producers of oxygen in our atmosphere. So, kill the oceans, we stop breathing. That's just a fact."(Margaret Atwood, in the Dutch TV show College Tour last night)

"'Bloodless dirge' … 'Plate of warmed-over vomit' … Just another couple of suggestions. Can someone explain if it's actually supposed to sound mawkish and flat as a brilliant ironic commentary on the futility of nostalgia and the ultimate emptiness of fantasy or if it's just lame. I’ve been debating this in my head for years."

"[Cassie J. Sneider of The] Rumpus: If you were in a bus accident with the Beach Boys and melted onto one member—into a mutant showcasing both of your positive and negative qualities—who would you choose and why?
"[Author Jeanne] Thornton: Probably Dennis Wilson! He would be fun because he's so completely crazy and adventuresome, and I'm less adventuresome, so it'd be a good combination of strengths, whereas my sensible side would curb his horrible destructive tendencies. It would depend on who got to be the legs, maybe."(From *The Rumpus Interview with Jeanne Thornton*, 7 November 2012)

"I guess, English can be a tricky language to sing in even for English speakers. I really don't love opera in English in general; my mother tongue just seems too much of a big, clumsy hippo for song."

"I've never liked the term 'superfan'. It smacks of elitism, of self-importance. … [Y]ou can just have the original Sounds Of Summer and be just as big, or as passionate, a fan as the guy who's got every release from 'Surfin'' on Candix 331 on and owns Brian's bowling shoes."( AGD, two days ago)

"LS: I think some people can be a little sensitive on the topic, maybe because it grates a bit when you hear people saying stuff like 'the Beach Boys were a great vocal group but didn’t play their own instruments like the Beatles did' 🙄 "JK: You could twist that around and say 'the Beatles were a great group who played their own instruments but they couldn't sing a cappella harmonies onstage like the Beach Boys did'. "(One of several memorable exchanges with LS, who I hope is OK)

"(One of several memorable exchanges with LS, who I hope is OK) But isn’t the truth somewhere in between? They played more than people think, and it seemed more expeditious to have the studio people do that, because the vocals were their trademark. They had to maybe wing-it a little and figure it out for the road, but the record company wanted them cranked out and better to get-it-done, than lollygag waiting for instrument parts to be mastered. It just made sense. 🎤🎶

"Nothing like it. Nothing like that rushing through the water at what seems to you a speed of about two hundred miles an hour; all the way in from the far distant raft , until you arrived, gently slowing down, on the beach, and foundered among the soft flowing waves. It is one of the most perfect physical pleasures that I have known." (Agatha Christie, on surfing)
