Here is one very expensive Viola and some Bach! Goodness! Well thank you, carllove, for joining in my humble thread! Your eye-opening post led me by a circuitous route to the Israeli violist Rivka Golani (born 1946). Did Edward Elgar make the transcription for viola of his Cello Concerto himself or was it viola legend Lionel Tertis with the composer's approval? Online reports differ. Whatever the case, here Ms Golani [was] is accompanied by the RPO under Vernon Handley in what my spies tell me is the concerto's first ever recording for viola and orchestra: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivka_Golani

It might help if I were to post a live performance for violin and viola to make clear to the uninitiated the differences between the two instruments. And what better work to do the job than Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola in E flat major (K364). In this historic performance given in London's Albert Hall in 1963, David Oistrakh and his son Igor play the solo parts. David, one of the greatest violinists of all time, switches effortlessly to viola for the occasion. The conductor is another world-class violinist, Yehudi Menuhin, with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under his baton. This is for LS (who posted other music played by Oistrakh during her tenure here), with apologies ( particularly since it was taken down). www.laphil.com/musicdb/pieces/657/sinfonia-concertante-in-e-flat-for-violin-and-viola-k-364Here's a replacement for now, the version I heard today of the last moment (Presto) played by Vilde Frang (violin) and Maxim Rysanov (viola), accompanied by the early music ensemble Arcangelo under its conductor Jonathan Cohen:

Eek, it's been a while since I posted here... The Bulgarian-British composer Dobrinka Tabakova (born 1980) wrote her Concerto for Viola and Strings in 2004. I heard the second movement, "Passionate and nostalgic", on Dutch radio today, conducted by Delyana Lazarova (who like Ms Tabakova hails from Plovdiv in Bulgaria), with Maxim Rysanov playing the solo part: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dobrinka_Tabakova
