In his Catch A Wave book, Peter Ames Carlin mentions the Wollensak tapes a few times and refers to intriguing content recorded in around the Wilson home. Brian was getting more and more enthralled by music and harmony so Audree and Murry bought him a Wollensak tape recorder - as well as early musical recordings Ames Carlin references a few pieces of funny dialogue between the brothers. Has anybody had the fortune to hear these tapes?

I am assuming early Brian demos like “happy birthday dear freshmen “ were recorded this way-though I stand to be corrected

I'm guessing some of this surfaced on the original Get The Boot discs.

They apparently feature a 14 year old Dennis begging Brian to let him record a pretend toothpaste ad but being denied by Brian and then Brian teasing Carl about his flab, as well as Brian practising his Spanish. Early scratchy renditions of Sloop John B feature too, lending further credibility to Sean Courtney's interesting theory about the song on his podcast. I've not seen much reference to these recordings anywhere though

Seems they had some nice instruments and a solid tape deck prior to fame and fortune. Murry and Audree get a lot of flack for their parenting skills (or lack thereof), but the Boys seem to have had some cool music toys to play with.

The tape of Murry directing Brian at the organ is really neat. Very pretty song they play together; probably one of the only instances of a Brian/Murry “duet” being preserved.
I seem to recall reading in a book (maybe Catch a Wave?) of Brian using his Wollensak to record him and his family singing “It’s a Blue World” together, I’d love to hear that one!

Great knowledge, folks. I managed to source a copy online so I'll enjoy listening to it with a beer later!

Some of my favorite beers (some brewed on the Left Coast) are Russian River Pliny the Elder, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale/Bigfoot Ale, Full Sail Amber Ale, Anchor Steam, Laguntas IPA, Modelo Especial, Stella, Heiny, Guinness on occasion, and Bluuuuuuue Mooooooon. But I'm cuttin' back.......

If anyone has a link to "Murry Directs Brian At The Organ" I'd love to hear it and see if it's a song I recognize.

But I'm cuttin' back....... Over where I am in the UK, we only get some of those. The Sierra Nevada pale is a popular US one here. But we have a whole other range to choose from... I try to limit my intake but it doesn't always work out too well 🤔

If anyone has a link to "Murry Directs Brian At The Organ" I'd love to hear it and see if it's a song I recognize. There's so much to enjoy on them - the Spanish stuff, Murry calling a kid's mum who has had a crash with Brian, Brian teasing his brothers - and that's not even mentioning the music on there. My favourite is Dennis having the hiccups when they're trying to record the Surfin' demo and Brian and Mike threatening to pop him in the mouth. Love it. Safe to say one beer turned into a few...

Sorry man, had to modify your post. Per the 'Rules Of The Land' (found on a tablet in a field in Hawthorne, California) Section I, Clause IV stipulates: "Discussing bootlegs is OK, but trading and posting trading site information is prohibited".

Aww sorry about that. I guess I need to brush up on my knowledge of the carvings etched into the sacred Hawthorne tablets!

But I'm cuttin' back....... Pliny the Elder is my jam-- best double IPA I've ever tried. Mikie, have you ever tried Pliny the Younger? The brew pub by my house (The Englander in San Leandro) would get a keg of it once a year and would have you buy a commemorative glass as cost of admission, and you then could drink until the keg was tapped. As for the Garage Tapes, anybody know who's exactly singing on Bermuda Shorts? I take it it's Brian and his school friends, although I still use an edit to open the Beach Boys compilation I made for the car.

I heard it comes out once a year and it’s gone in 2-3 weeks so you gotta be quick! Never had the pleasure though. This weekend, some friends and I tried 'Space Dust', an IPA out of Seattle. It was very good! My favorite cut on the CD is “Dennis Is A Prick”.

I love a good brewery, especially the ones where you can sample the different ales on tap - it never tastes better. The glass from my last trip to a decent brewery near me smashed recently so I'm due a trip back some time soon...

But I'm cuttin' back....... I’ve had everyone of those except Pliny and Modelo....also just had SpaceDust as you mentioned a few posts down. My go to IPA the last few years has been Dogfish Head 90 Minute. Not drinking beer these days as often as I was 5-10 years ago as I tend to feel bloated and mostly drink at home so it’s wine with my better half. Out near your neck of the world Mikie....Dry Creek Sonoma County) there is a small vineyard called Preston Farm we visited 2 years ago that makes some great domestic wine. We had them ship an assortment case and have one bottle a month with a good dinner and they’ve all been great. I’ve only been to Europe once (Italy) but knocking something back in a pub in Great Britain is on my bucket list. I’m ready to talk about Bourbon now.... The pop me in the mouth thing is legit on the Lost and Found cd but I’m sure most of you know that. It is fun to hear so I might seek out that boot as well.

I love a good wine with dinner too.
Modelo Especial is very easy to get off the shelf. And it just so happens that I have a Dogfish Head Craft Beer train car (but haven't tried the beer) Comes out of Delaware, right?

The "pop me in the mouth" comment isn't on Lost & Found, it's on Hawthorne, CA and Made in California though! "This is the tone of Dennis Wilson's voice" is also sourced from the Wollensak Tapes (specifically, the "Ipana Toothpaste" track, blew my mind when I first heard it!)
For anyone else with the Garage Tapes boot, can anyone identify the song Brian's listening to in the background of the toothpaste track? The Garage Tapes is definitely one of my favorite BB boots; it's such a deep and personal dive into the family life of the Wilsons prior to that little "Pendletones" thing they got themselves into! Actually having multiple tapes of Brian teaching himself and practicing harmonies at the piano, as well as the family offhandedly singing the very song that would eventually earn them a #3 placement on the US billboard charts some six years later, is like the BBs equivalent finding a preserved dinosaur in an iceberg. Really fascinating stuff.
