Sorry to bump an old thread but I just got this in the mail today. I do not have any hi-res equipment but I can say that the new remaster does sound better than the Caribou 1991 issue as just a regular CD. The packaging is beautiful (mini Lp).
It is a nice addition to a collection if you come across it.

Does it use the alternate mixes?

Does it use the alternate mixes? Yes, this uses the alternate and single mixes (where applicable) as originally presented on the LP.

Pity it's so damn expensive.

Pity it's so damn expensive. Given it’s published by UME, seems strange it’s not easily available in other regions. Perhaps we can assume this came from a 1/1 copy of the US tape that was made for the original JP edition, and was easily accessible to the compilers.

Don't need 'em. I have all those songs already in many different kindsa formats. Even 8 track and Beta. I'm not going to subscribe to the marketing ploys anymore and change my hardware every time there's new software. I was going to pick up an Oppo player a couple of years ago but never got around to it. Now that I know you can't throw everything at it, forget it, unless I can get it for around two hunderd. Just bought two laptops that set me back 3K and I have to save my dimes for these now: www.tomsguide.com/news/sony-wh-1000xm4P.S. And I don't do effing Twitter, Discord, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, or Tiktok either. Shoot me now! Good work, mate - especially avoid Tiktok! Haha!

Well, just sprung for it. No doubt you can hear the sound of me being ripped off...

Well, just sprung for it. No doubt you can hear the sound of me being ripped off... LOL, actually, couldn’t hear a thing due to the pervading sound of John M waiting for his Amazon gamble(s) to pay off. Let us know what you think, Ed, and any other tidbits about the packaging!

I'm 65 years old: for me, hi-res is being able to hear anything at all.

I bought this last week because I was curious but I can't hear any difference. The album sleeve is nice and well detailed but I can't literally read lyrics, I need a lens!

I bought this yesterday off of eBay for $40. Not a bad price coming directly from Japan. Plus $10 shipping. Not expected to be delivered for over a month; April 23rd.

I found a copy for $30 and I had a $5 off digital coupon. Can't wait to get it this weekend!

Got mine today and it is indeed a flat transfer from the compiled copy master that Carl assembled back in 1981, versus a going thru and pulling together all of the individual tracks again. It says so in the notes, that it was a flat transfer by the guys at IRON MOUNTAIN where the tape is stored. I like the sound of it. One way to tell its from that original tape is the drop out in Good Timin' at the line "a celebrations, of being together". It was there on the original and its there on this version as well. Glad I got it. Sounds better than the 1991 EU version from Holland. Less distance between the master.

I quoted my own post because I wanted to add to it. I have had this set for almost a month and am just falling in love all over again with the sound quality of this material. I ripped the CDs to play in my car (64 gb memory stick, man how times have changed). I corrected the dropout in Good Timin', pretty easy to do. I am just repeatedly floored by this flat transfer. This CD sounds great!

There is just a great sound to this transfer. Now, when playing this in my car, because of the flat transfer, the highs aren't there to be heard over the street sounds. But when listening at home, it is great. Like listening to vinyl (almost).
