Will update this as I transcribe more!
PASSING BY (1971 Demo) (B. Wilson/S. Shapiro/T. Almer)
Somewhere along the avenue I stopped to have a look at you Said "hi" as you were just passing by
And as I drove you home with me A feelin' warmin' over me Said you were more than just passing by
Warm nights, quiet nights, nights of living dreams So close to were to me (Brian messes up the line here) All I ever needed
Somehow, I thought I'd fill the need You'd stay a build a nest with me I didn't guess you're just passing by
And as your distance seemed to grow I've come to really miss you so A word I wish was just passing by
Warm nights, quiet nights, nights of living dreams So close you were to me All I ever needed
I guess I'm still in love with you I'll always stay in love with you I guess I'm still in love with you I'll always stay in love with you
PEACHES (D. Wilson)
Peaches, you're drivin' me crazy Well Peaches, you truly amaze me Tweedle dee, tweedle-dee dum You make my heart come all undone
Peaches, you're drivin' me crazy Peaches, you truly amaze me Tweedle dee, tweedle-dee dum You make my heart come all undone
Come here, now closer Peaches, Peaches Peaches, Peaches-ooh
(nonsense syllables) The sweetness of your warm and lovin' kiss Send my heart right into bliss
FOURTH OF JULY (Development Demo) (D. Wilson/J. Rieley)
Child of the west, befriend my best Suppose(?) sentiment best, who wants to be free? Inspiring me at heart, infusing in me Breath of song
Why has it gone? Pray for Santa Ana Winds to clear All that I have to fear, why has it gone?
*Fake mocking laughter* (?)Still wanting me(?), the secking(?) upon (very hard to make this one out, Jack really slurs this line) The feeling of free, wistful song
I'll leave the dawn (GO!) Pray for Santa Ana Winds to appear All that I have to fear, why has it gone? (GO!) Pray for Santa (GO!) Ana Winds to appear (GO!) All that I have to (GO!) fear, why has it gone?
I'VE GOT A FRIEND (D. Wilson/D. Dragon)
Sometimes I'm here and I'm all alone But I'm not alone, mmm, I've got a friend Sometimes, I wonder what it's all about Then you come along, mmm, my friend
My friend, My friend My friend, My friend
Sometimes I'm lost and can't find my way Then you come and say, mmm, "I'm your friend" Can't go off and feel the wind on my face, mmm Hello, hello my friend
My friend, my friend My friend, my friend
(instrumental break)
I've got a friend, will make you giggle if you're feelin' sad Just like the wind blows, that's how our friendship goes Reach out, touch my life, touch my soul
You make me feel warm, when I know it's really cold You took me by surprise, you really overcome my eyes I know, now I see, yes I know
You've got a friend, I've got a friend We got a friend, ahh, whoa we got us a friend
(I based this transcription off of the group's performance of the song at their 12/3/71 show at Long Beach Arena. Other live performances might have slight lyrical differences.)
WE GOTTA GROOVE (B. Wilson)
She said to me, "honey, play me a record 'cause I feel alright, I feel alright" I said to her, "honey, listen to what I got on the turntable, it's outta sight" The music started, and we started groovin' The rockin' beat said that we should be movin'
She took my hand and then she started walkin' me across the floor, across the floor I turned to her and I told her that I didn't know how to dance, that's for sure She took her foot and stuck it out to the right, now I'm gonna do it if it takes me all night, now
We, we, we gotta groove We, we, we gotta move We, we, we gotta groove Ahh, ahh, we can groove it on this way (Repeat ad nauseam)
HEY THERE MOMMA (B. Wilson)
Are you ready to rock? (Yeah!) Are you ready to roll? (Okay!/Alright!) Are you ready to bop? (Who, me?!?!) Are you ready to stroll? (Sure!/ha-ha!)
Hey there momma, I'm sittin' here in my chair I need a cup of coffee, and I'm not goin' nowhere
Are you ready to jump? (Yeah!) Are you ready to bump? (Okay!/Alright) Are you ready to flip? (Who, me?/Sure am/What?!?!) Are you ready to fly? (Why, sure!/Up in the sky!/ha-ha!)
Hey there momma, whatcha got cookin' tonight? I'm all through workin', I wanna get it outta sight
Are you ready to sing? (Why, yeah!) Are you ready to swing? (Okay!/Yeah!) Are you ready to dance? (Who, me?/I dunno!/Cha-cha!) And take a chance? (Oh sure thing, alright!/Or make a romance!)
Hey there momma, (?)wig hat(?) looks okay, alright! It's only ten thirty, yeah we still got lots of time to play
(Lyrics provided for "We Gotta Groove" and "Hey There Momma" courtesy of Klay, who has since deleted his posts from that infamous Smiley Smile thread)
Let me know if you guys need help with any other lyrical transcriptions!

Semi-related, but recently came across this lyric sheet for "We Gotta Groove," featuring some alternate lyrics. Pretty cool stuff! And of course, the original lyric sheet for "Life is for the Living," featuring the scrapped bridge lyrics:

Don't ask me how I found this one...
I REALLY LOVE YOU (B. Wilson)
I just have to say that I love you I just have to say that I do I just have to say that I love you I just have to say that I do
I go places, and I think a lot What will I ever get back? Back to when the time was right To say what was on my mind
I just have to say that I love you I just have to say that I do I just have to say that I love you I just have to say that I do
Feeling lost isn't always fun And I go through a lot And I think, will I ever get back Back to the times I knew?
I just have to say that I love you I just have to say that I do I just have to say that I love you I just have to say that I do
I go places, and I think a lot What will I ever get back? Back to when the time was right To say what was on my mind

Might as well contribute to this with my own transcription of the Wilson/Sandler demo for Silly Walls. I'm still a bit unsure of the first verse. I just picked the words that sounded right and fit the theme of the song.
Silly Walls (D. Sandler/B. Wilson?)
I built some walls in myself and the world Walls of envy and suspicion. Walls of hate I hid behind them kept myself free from intruders Til you came by, but those walls never break
Then you kissed me and my walls began to tremble Your words of love they fell upon me. Like a crown And when you took me in your arms. Oh my darling. Oh my love. I felt those walls, those silly walls, begin to sway
When you told me (I told you) That you loved me. (I love you) I felt them slipping. I tried to find a way to turn away.
(Solo, 8 bars) I just took you in my arms. Oh my darling. Oh my love And those walls, those silly walls, came tumbling down.
Your silly walls came tumbling down. Your silly walls came tumbling down. (To fade)

Where did the transcribed "We Gotta Groove" lyrics come from?? I've only ever heard a partially complete recording that only has variations on the phrase "we gotta groove."

A LITTLE SOMETHIN' (B. Wilson)
A little somethin' could sound like somethin' A little somethin' could sound like somethin' And if you wanna, we can do it Yes, if you wanna, we can do it And if you're into it, then let's get to it
Someone told me you might hide it But I say "try it, and you might like it" She took my hand, and I smiled with her Next thing you know, we were rockin' it up
A little somethin' could sound like somethin' A little somethin' could sound like somethin' And if you wanna, we can do it Yes, if you wanna, we can do it And if you're into it, then let's get to it
Someone told me you might hide it But I say "try it, and you might like it" She took my hand, and I smiled with her Next thing you know, we were rockin' it up, whoa
At first I thought, you couldn't swing it Then you showed me you could really wing it I started shoutin' to Bobby Joe "Wrap that one up, let's hit the road!"
A little somethin' could sound like somethin' A little somethin' could sound like somethin' And if you wanna, we can do it Yes, if you wanna, we can do it And if you're into it, then let's get to it
OH LORD (B. Wilson)
And God, all my life with thee There’s so much to see, I’m not alone
And God, let me hear their song Let me be okay forevermore
In Earth(?), when I believe It is all that I know, all that I know
Make me safe from everything Let me see what there is to see
And God, please let me see All there is to see, please let me see
And God, when the children sing And the love they bring, all the parents quickly see(?) (Second half is very hard to make out, definitely a seven-syllable line though)
Oh Lord, please let me see All there is to see
Make me safe from everything Let me see what there is to see
?I have fallen, from far, my way? (Very tough to make this one out, obviously my best approximation makes little sense!) I’m not ?really me? (Equally difficult to make out, though I am positive the first two words are indeed “I’m not”) Give me life, give me love, right now (Only line I was able to fully comprehend)
Alright, okay
(Take 2 Starts)
And God, let me be alone Let me live my life forevermore
Oh, oh, now, forevermore
Give me love, let me see you, Lord Let me be with my friend, whoa Life...not to be Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah (repeat ad nauseam)
WHY DON'T YOU TELL ME WHY? (B. Wilson)
Why don't you tell me why Why don't you tell me why Why don't you tell me why Why don't you tell me why you've been good to me
You washed my clothes at night You cleaned everything in sight You did everything you could To make me feel so good Why don't you tell me why you've been good to me?
(First half of the bridge is cut off) I was a drag, I was hag And now you tell me I'm the only one
You're smiling when I frown You're happy when I'm down I'm sleepin', you're in town But you'll always be around Why don't you tell me why you've been good to me?
How can I pay you back? You're goin' off the track And looking back on all of this I can start it with a kiss Why don't you tell me why you've been good to me?

WON'T YOU TELL ME (R. Henn/M. Wilson)
Won't you tell me What you gave the ones before me 'Cause I wonder 'Bout the lovin' you warm me
I'm not trying to pry Into your last goodbye But I feel the past within your weeping Girl, please be patient with me And please don't cry
No, you don't have to worry Yes, we will be together Forever, you and I
Won't you tell me What you were before I found you 'Cause I worry How you feel when I'm around you
If I hurry too much when I kiss you It's because I'm happy to be near you So please be patient with me, and we'll get by
No, we won't have to worry 'Cause we will be together And it will be forever Forever, you and I
No, we won't have to worry 'Cause we will be together And it will be forever Forever, you and I
IT'S A NEW DAY (D. Wilson/S. Shapiro)
Pack up your troubles, forget all your problems Remember the times we made it together So happy and free So happy it's a new day
It's been a long time, you know that I love you I've got to be near you, I need all your lovin' You got to believe me You're building your life
Isn't it funny, oh, how the time may change I'm in love with you
Please let me hear you say that you want me You know I've been waiting just to be near you My life was so empty Living, living without you Oh lord, yeah
It's been a long road, we made it together We left all our problems, I'll always be with you So happy and free So happy it's a new day
Isn't it funny, oh, how the time may change I'm in love with you Ooh, come on, come on
Pack up your troubles, forget all your problems I've got to be near you You've got to believe me We're building your life
BARNYARD BLUES (D. Wilson)
The men who live on the farm They live by their arm The women who live on the farm They reflect his charm And they are happy Happy 'cause they're livin' and free
Summer's gone, summer's gone We've worked all along Friday nights here at last Mmm, we can feel gonna make it last And now the children have come out of the barn They no longer wish to live by the arm
We have climbed up the fences Took a look past the cloud And we found the whole new way Lookin' at now
We walked along a bumpy road, oh so long The cloudy dust before summer rains goes Come on, and we'll let it rain Come on, and we'll let it rain Come on, and we'll let it rain
Come on, and we'll let it rain Come on, and we'll let it rain Come on, and we'll let it rain Come on, and we'll let it rain
SILLY WALLS (D. Sandler)
I built some walls between myself and the world Walls of envy and suspicion, walls of hate I hid behind them, kept myself free from intruders 'Till you came by, thought those walls would never break
Then you kissed me, and my walls began to tremble Your words of love, they fell upon me like a crown And when you took me in your arms Oh my darlin', oh my love I felt those walls, those silly walls, begin to sway
When you told me (I told you) That you love me (I love you) I felt them slippin' I tried to find a way, to turn away
I just took you in my arms Oh my darlin', oh my love And those walls, those silly walls, came tumblin' down
Your silly walls came tumblin' down Your silly walls came tumblin' down Your silly walls came tumblin' down Your silly walls came tumblin' down
SWEET AND BITTER (D. Goldberg)
Endlessly I've dreamed of love and its fever And how it could bring such a change through the years Now that it's all real, and nowhere to run We must make the best of the things that we've done
a-Sittin' 'round, thinkin' 'bout it rips my soul It drives me to the bitter end, you know Glad that it's over, and love didn't last I'll think of the future, to heck with the past
And the words don't come from the harmony Girl we can't go on, make-believin' we're still in love Can't you see it's meant to be?
Love was a sweet dream, I woke it was gone And then came the bad times, on and on If that's how it must be, I don't feel so bad And I'll count your love as the worst that I've had
And the words don't come from the harmony Girl we can't go on, make-believin' we're still in love Can't you see it's meant to be?
Sweet and bitter ways are not often one When one's for another, it can't be done I followed a dream and it took me away Away from those fevers we caught yesterday
IN THE COUNTRY (B. Wilson/D. Goldberg)
I can't see me hangin' around Shufflin' the feet through the same ragged town All of this city life's takin' me down, can't you see?
Out in the country's where I'd rather be Greetin' the new day, so fresh and clean Grazin' in fields that are mellow and green
In the country, everything's green In the country's where I'd rather be
Buildings are reachin' on up to the sky Towering over the birds as they fly Whatever happened to the clear, blue skies you could see?
Well they're out in the country, where breathing is free And wide open spaces are waitin' for me I gotta go where the livin' is clean
In the country, everything's green In the country's where I'd rather be
Out in the country where the water and air is clean And birds fly, whoa Blue skies, whoa Homemade pie, whoa
Whoa, I'm sayin' goodbye to the same crowded streets The fast-movin' ways of the people I meet I gotta be movin' on, this kinda life ain't for me
And when I'm grittin' the teeth with a plow in my hand I'll be contented to life off the land Doin' my own thing as a free man
In the country, everything's green In the country's where I'd rather be
Out in, in the country Out in, in the country Livin' out in, in the country Livin' out in, in the country

ECOLOGY: PART ONE (ALL OF MY LOVE) (D. Wilson/D. Dragon)
All of my love, bigger than the ocean All of my heart, I give to you All that I am, is movin' in the river Ohhh
(According to Alan Boyd, the second section consists of Dennis repeatedly singing "run run, river run")
CLANGIN' (B. Wilson)
CLANGIN' CLANGIN', CLANG IMMA DINGIN' IMMA CLANGIN' CLANGIN', CLANG IMMA DINGIN' IMMA CLANGIN' CLANGIN', CLANG IMMA DINGIN' IMMA CLANGIN' CLANGIN', CLANG IMMA DINGIN' IMMA CLANGIN' CLANGIN', CLANG IMMA DINGIN' IMMA CLANGIN' CLANGIN', CLANG IMMA DINGIN' IMMA CLANGIN' CLANGIN', CLANG IMMA DINGIN' IMMA CLANGIN' CLANGIN', CLANG IMMA DINGIN' IMMA (Repeat ad nauseam)
I SAID A PRAYER (B. Wilson)
I search this world, for a little bit? (Last word is completely inaudible, I'm only basing my guess on the previous words) The fall is new, birds all sing their song I thought a prayer, I just know it's true I sing a prayer, that you'll be alright
I FEEL SO FINE (B. Wilson)
Whoa, whoa-oh-oh Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah We're gonna party now(?) (last word is quite difficult to make out) Be-doo, be-doo-be-doo-doo-doo
I feel, I feel so fine Yeah, I feel so fine Whoa-be-doo-be-doo
Whoa I, I feel fine, I feel Whoa, I feel fine, so fine So fine, I feel so fine Yeah
I, whoa, feel, feel I, I feel so fine Yeah, I feel so fine All the time All the time, all the time
Yeah! Whoa, feel so fine So fine, I feel so fine Yeah, I feel so fine today
Hey! Ohh, I feel so fine today
~OHH! WOW!! YOU REALLY GET INTO THAT!! I-I WAS FEELIN' SO GOOD ON THAT ORGAN! DID YOU HEAR THAT?!?! I MADE THAT SONG UP (pretty cool) Yeah, a great organ, I made that song up-WHOA, I FEEL SO FINE!~
-y little babyyyy (Pretty sure this was an impromptu run-through of "Be My Baby" that Brian taped over with "I Feel So Fine")

Might as well add some more. California Feeling edition!
Santa Ana Winds (Early Version) (B. Wilson)
On my porch Thinkin' about the torch I've been carrying for you so long.
And my love Thinkin' about our love Like the Santa Ana Winds blow strong
Been so long Since you've been gone Been caring for you so long
Santa Ana Winds keep blowing 'cross my mind Santa Ana Winds keep blowing 'cross my mind
Grunion Run Here they come Remember how we'd stay out all night
And in the night By the pale moonlight We'd roll our jeans up then run with the tide
Then we'd retire By a beach fire Into a world of a different kind.
Santa Ana Winds blow gently 'cross our minds Santa Ana Winds blow gently 'cross our minds
And the times Were sublime I didn't think it ever would last
'cause in your eyes I surmised That your light was changing fast
Maybe we'll make up And repair this break up And we'll be together again
Santa Ana Winds keep blowin' 'cross my mind (Baby you light this fire deep inside) Santa Ana Winds keep blowin' 'cross my mind (Burning bright with desire deep inside)
Looking Down the Coast/Monterey (A. Jardine)
Looking down the coast I can't see the end Where is the end, fog rolling in
Looking down the coast I see the rugged headlands Rising from the sea at lands end.
Sitting at a place called Nepenthe's we can see it there Mountain lion's lair
Sitting at Nepenthe looking down on the coast Arlington Cove, Portuguese Coast
And just off the rocks, floating out in the bay Sea Otters play in the cool ocean spray
The California Gray Whales playing there Haven't got a care
This must be Monterey I see fire lights 'round the bay The Indians live this way I must go ashore and find out if this soil is good enough to till.
We'll take our treasures, trinkets too We'll go ashore and inland too The King wants it that way We can rule the seas and spread the word of God to every heathen land
For one long year we've been to sea I miss my wife and family My mistress is the sea Oh it's been so long since I have had a Woman's breast to lay my head on
Looking down the Little Sur from Hurricaine point Clouds going by, where eagles fly
And blowin' so hard the waves turn white Blowin' all day and blowin' all night
And through the eyes of the hawk you can see it there Mountain lions there
Heading for the Big Sur valley at last Racing fast across lighthouse flats
And just at the rocks, there came such a sight A lighthouse keeper's house and lighthouse light
The California Condor once was there Does anybody care?
We'll fill our holds with native gold And then we'll save their heathen souls The king wants it that way.
I'm Begging You Please (B. Wilson)
Baby, oh baby You've taken something away from me Oh baby, oh baby Somehow you've gone astray from me
You stopped giving me what I wanted for so long And without you baby life's not so easy and something is wrong
Say you miss the way it used to be Say you'll make it happen somehow Say you'll take a chance on love again Without ending up with a broken heart again
I mean it this time. I'm begging you with all my heart
I'm begging you please Please Please my darling
I'm begging you please Please Please my darling
I'm begging you please.
[Just saying, if that basic track they recorded for this appeared on some 60th anniversary box alongside the demo vocal, I wouldn't complain.]

In that second verse of Santa Ana Winds, you've got the words "Runyon Run." I think it far more likely to be "grunion run," a California tradition in which the sardine-sized fish known as the grunion invade beaches to spawn. By law, the grunions can only be caught by hand, so Californians make a sport of it by going to the beaches and grabbing all the fish they can. I can easily imagine that Al participated in this activity. I have a harder time believing that he cruised by Damon Runyon's house or raced him in a footrace.
