I've had this going around my head for quite a while now - another piece of sheer beauty from the Beach Boys. I can understand why it meant so much to Brian. There are a few versions out there made from the original sessions but this is one of the best I've come across. I guess it's almost like a mini SMiLE for not being fully finished and other band members reportedly getting frustrated by Brian's search for perfection. For me this is up there! I wonder how close his vision was to this...

Got to agree with you again!
Gorgeous vocal arrangement and performances, such a sweet sound.

They were so close to having it done, it's a wonder it wasn't released at the time.

I've heard a few different edits but yours really nails it so well done! There's what seems to be a background groan in the take at the 1:30ish mark but to me this version is pretty much perfection. I guess Brian's gift for vocal and musical intricacies meant the recordings as they were hadn't yet matched his vision and the rest of the band were getting frustrated with it all. Out of interest - how many sections were put together in this edit? I really like how the momentum builds throughout the song, unlike some of the other edits that are out there. I can't see how Brian's 'final' version would differ greatly from this edit. I'm listening to it every day at the moment - not quite at the Be My Baby level yet but getting there! We'll done again and thanks for sharing it for others to enjoy as a final piece.

I always assumed the groan was because of the vocal flub "He must say somethin'" instead of "He must know somethin'"
The backing vocals had it right.

I think you nailed it with your last sentence. I recall reading somewhere (liner notes to the 2fer possibly?) that the OMR sessions were fraught with tension. Also, I think the big guy went into the hospital right about this time, so maybe they just abandoned it and moved onto other things? Hey, no problem. Glad somebody out there enjoyed it. I've been editing Beach Boys outtakes for years now. They're the only band I'm aware of whose music lends itself so well to the fan mixing treatment, apart from maybe the sixties-era Mothers of Invention. I've amassed several CDs worth of Beach Boys mixes I've done for personal pleasure throughout the years, and they make for a fun listen sometimes. Regarding sections for this track, I can't rightly recall as I put it together back in 2015! It had to have been some combination of the two bonus track versions, the accapella Hawthorne version and Sea of Tunes sessions. I do remember overdubbing some river sounds (frogs and insects) over the piano breakdown to give it a little more atmosphere.

Cheers, Mikie. Here's another one I uploaded to YouTube before I finally got frustrated with them pulling most of my content off.

Cheers, Mikie. Here's another one I uploaded to YouTube before I finally got frustrated with them pulling most of my content off. Nicely done Jason. I've got an edit I did last year assembled from many of the official archival releases over the years. All my favorite sections pieced together. I should really post it somewhere.

Cheers, Mikie. Here's another one I uploaded to YouTube before I finally got frustrated with them pulling most of my content off. Great work! Listening to well done reconstructions like these really adds value to the original unfinished material. On this one it would be amazing to hear it with a 67 vocal but that's just wishful thinking... I'd be interested to hear some of the others you've done.

I was able to find one more that wasn't pulled from my YouTube channel-- the '68 counterpart to the version of BWTL I posted earlier.

So wonderful when people come together to share something for the sheer love of music and of beauty. Such wonderful scholars here. Who is all singing on this?

wontlastforever , @custom Machine -- since you both expressed interest in hearing more of my edits and remixes, I've compiled everything I've worked on in years past and am finally able to share it. Links provided in case either of you still wanted to check 'em out. Smile album - My personal Smile album, with no attempt at historical accuracy. Smile test edits - Smile-era edits, some with a more historically plausible conception, others just for fun. Non-Smile edits and remixes - All the non-Smile stuff. Bambu album - My preferred Bambu. More specific information on each track can be found in the accompanying liner notes. Cheers.

By the way, A Storm in Heaven and A Northern Soul are two absolutely superb albums!

Wait - forgive the ignorance - was this a Capitol release at some point? I LOVE this recording and arrangement! Thanks for the reminder - and well done on putting this all together, would love to hear more!

“Old Folks At Home (Swanee River)/“Ol’ Man River” was eventually released as a bonus track on the "Friends/20/20" 2-fer's in 1990 and 2000 (Originally recorded May, 1968).
Old Man River (a Capella 2018 mix) (recorded June 5, 1968) is on the "I Can Hear Music: The 20/20 Sessions" copyright extension release. So is "Medley: Old Folks At Home/Old Man River (alternate version) lead vocal (recorded June 10, 1968) and "Medley: Old Folks At Home/Old Man River (alternate version track)".
Per David Leaf's liners : "As the Beach Boys’ music has taken its place in American pop culture as important “folk” art, maybe it’s appropriate that the CD of their last Capitol LP of the 1960s includes a snatch of a traditional American classic, Stephen Foster’s “Old Folks At Home.” That’s followed by “Ol’ Man River,” from the landmark Broadway musical “Showboat,” which presents another opportunity to hear how the Beach Boys could transform any kind of music into “Beach Boys” music. Great vocals on “Ol’ Man River” and “Walk On By” make them exciting bonus tracks that even in their incomplete form, are worthy of inclusion on this CD, which brings the Beach Boys’ first Capitol era to an end".
Mr. Desper's recollections from a few years ago:
"I remember recording Old Man River from time to time. It was a song Brian worked on all the time. I assume all of the "working tracks" are in the vault, but since they are "working tracks" the advent of their release will be some time in the future. You see Brian was very interested in vocal arrangement and this song lent itself to experimentation with different vocal blends. Remember that the human voice is unique in that it can sing chords that, when played on a piano, sound un-harmonic. But, when sang, the sounds combine into something beautiful. Even singing two adjacent notes can sound like music, whereas when played on a polyphonic instrument will sound dissonant. So although he would play the parts on the keys, he would hear what they could sound like in his mind's ear. He would turn to his group to bring those sounds to life. Sometimes that life was absolutely an outstanding blend that could transport you to another time and place".

Thanks Mikie! I knew about the most recent releases, but love the in depth info, did not know - I saw the cover art and thought maybe I missed something. That must be his creation as well? Thank so much!

Great, hopefully the links are still functional. If not just let me know. In definite agreement with you on those two by the Verve. A Storm in Heaven resonates with me in the same way Loveless does with so many others.
