My question is: why ?
Maybe it's me, but I've never understood why anyone does this. Got something to say, I'll say it under my own flag. Granted, some are pretty transparent but otherwise... I don't get it. Yeah, it's a giggle (allegedly), yeah, I probably have no SOH (probably), yeah it's following in a fine literary tradition but to me this remains one of the great mysteries of modern life.

I don't really know what you're saying. Do you mean a username?

I guess some people feel insecure about revealing their real name online for reasons such as avoidance of identity fraud, or perhaps they’re self-conscious about giving opinions that might get shot down. Whereas others might feel extra secure knowing that they’re able to troll the shit out of someone else with impunity. I’ve always been Peter Whitfield to those who know me, and from the tender age of six at St Augustine’s primary school in Darlington I got saddled with the nickname ‘sneaky’; not the faintest idea why, but when you’re six there are much more important things in your life, like pretending to be an aeroplane in the school yard, and it has stuck all these years (the ‘sneaky’ bit, not trying to be an aeroplane). And Andrew, please don’t feel that you have to denigrate yourself when it comes to your SOH. There’s no ‘probably’ about it at all – you definitely have one, and I can attest to having witnessed it on at least three occasions in the almost forty years I’ve known you.

I've been hit by an online scam in the past so once bitten, twice etc. Also, I'd rather my family didn't find itself in trouble on my behalf. So my initials suit me fine. To be quite honest, I love the variety of folks' online handles, from the wondrous likes of pigflusneeza and Shatty McPants to, say, George Faulkner. That said, I tend not to trust posters with handles like 0oo0oo0.

And I have to say your English is improving in leaps and bounds. How you find the time to do that whilst managing the mighty Liverpool FC is a miracle in itself.

I don't know what you mean. I am Ms P. Witch, and I also have quite a luxuriant beard arrangement.

Actually, sneakypete77 , as a Brit living in NL it's a constant battle to retain some sort of grasp on the mother tongue when all one hears all day is Dutch. There is this terrible affliction called Dunglish--English that's gone Dutch. To be avoided at all costs! Forums such as this are a godsend in that respect. No internet-speak, few abbreviations--it all helps to keep in touch with the English language.

There’s no chance of me revealing my real name on an internet forum, let me tell you that for nothing!

And what to think of someone taking the opportunity to change their alias when their forum switched to a more sympathetic host and an occasional poster familiar with that person from earlier forums speaking to them for weeks on end without realizing who they are? Unlikely, I know, but it happened recently.
