While driving home I heard a nice segment about Lamont Dozier. He said the expression on one of the songs he co-wrote, “sugar pie, honeybunch” was something his Grandma always said. “Reach Out, I’ll Be there” is a favorite. And if I’m in a dancing mood, nothing’s better than Martha Reeves and the Vandellas’ ”Heatwave.” Brian’s FB page has a nice tribute to him.

Rare Earth are that rare commodity, an all-white band on Motown. Best known for their take on The Temptations' "Get Ready", a US #1 in 1970, they make an even better job of covering Ray Charles' "What'd I Say". Fans of Inglourious Basterds may recognize the final minute of percussion as the music Tarantino uses when Donny and Omar head for their seats in the cinema: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_World_(Rare_Earth_album)

I only learned today that in 1964 Stevie Wonder (then still Little) recorded a curious sea-and-sand album, seemingly an abortive attempt by Gordy and company to ease Little Stevie onto the beach party market. I remember hearing one of its singles ("Hey Harmonica Man") at the time, and decades later the hidden gem that was the first of the three to be released. "Castles In The Sand" was arranged by Jack Nitzsche ( here): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevie_at_the_Beach
