The Beach Boys are in desperate need of a long-form archival documentary a la Beatles Anthology. I suspect that this will just be a variation on Endless Harmony and the Brian docs, and I can't say I'm particularly excited by the prospect of cutaways to Janaelle Monae, et al. saying complimentary things about the group to pad out the runtime. Or a new Brian Wilson interview.

Liking this, especially as we current have a Disney sub so the kids can watch Star Wars n stuff.
Most excited for this:
“There’ll also be an official soundtrack featuring songs from the film, which will hit streaming services on May 24.”
and hoping for new old rarities and a physical release.

Guess I shouldn't have given up Disney+. 🤷🏼♂️ Here's hoping whatever music release they put out is something akin to the excellent 𝐸𝑛𝑑𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝐻𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑦 soundtrack.

In the description I didn't see any reference to the visit to Paradise Cove and singing acapella. Any more backstage information about that?

I'm grateful that my cable package also includes Disney+. But I really hope that this documentary will also be released on DVD/Blu-Ray, so I can have it in a physical media format -- with bonus material.

I gave up my cable subscription years ago. Sadly, it appears that the days of these things getting a DVD release are over. Maybe some of it will find its way over to You Tube. In any event, it seems that this is not the multi-part series many of us were hoping for.

In the first quarter of 2024, the number of global Disney+ subscribers world wide amounted to 149.6 million. Looks like I'll have to subscribe next month and be one of those 149.6 million. It's only 5 bucks. Then I'll wait for the DVD (if it happens).

I guess I won’t be watching. Disney+ is not part of my cable lineup and I have no intentions of spending more bucks on TV streaming.

Disney+ is not part of my cable package either, but I just found out I can add it for only 5 bucks for the whole month, so I'll call 'em up. Get a bunch of movies and the Taylor Swift Eras concert thrown in (which I'll be on the edge of my seat watching of course), then when the time comes, I'll put on my '62 vintage Pendleton shirt and the family will all gather around, I'll light a bucket of wood on fire, roast marshmallows, and watch the Beach Boys documentary. Looking forward to it.

That doesn't mean you wont 'not' have to see it. Lot's of ways to skin a cat... I've got friends in low places. Let the 'Horsie' get to work.

It worries me it could fall into line with being one of these 'talking head' documentaries featuring everybody else more than the actual Beach Boys. I mean to be honest, I don't give 'shite' what Lindsay Buckingham has to say about The Beach Boys.... or Don Was....or whoever these other 'drop in's' are... We know the drill, bring in Springsteen, Elton, Sean Lennon, Elvis Costello..... pffft! Over it. Most have not had anything to do with the guys! If I want talking heads? Bring in Ed Carter, Fred Vail, Tony Asher, Van Dyke, Jerry Schilling, Carnie/Wendy, Matt Jardine, Stamos, Blondie Chaplin, Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford.... You know I hate to do a 'downer', but these things these days usually end up in great disappointment. I'm also a tough critic.

Rick what you describe is a standard nightmare for fans when it comes to a documentary. It's been done to death, you're right. I may have missed a beat here but is this not the same people who put together the great documentary about Elvis which was completely intellectually legitimate? I've been so busy teaching for courses at school that I have not had the opportunity to look into the details of the documentary and confirm all this.
My focus is the hope of seeing the five Beach Boys sitting together conversing and presumably even singing a little bit, as has been reported.
At the grammy event I watched them intently for 4 hours with my binoculars looking for any gesture or indication of intimacy or magic. I hope the filmmakers in actually bringing them together with a camera and a microphone captured something meaningful. What do they need to say to each other and to Eternity at this point.

I, per usual, might have a more optimistic take than some of you. I understand why many of you prepare for potential disappointment with these kinda things but I try to be optimistic. As any of you who I’ve conversed with before know, I always try to take the most positive outlook when it comes to anything from this band! I absolutely think it’s a miracle anytime we get new product from them. There will possibly be a day when there’s no more new BBs releases (media or otherwise) so I will always cherish and each and every new thing we get.
Anyway, I shared these following comments in Matt & Greg’s FB thread on the subject, and instead of retyping everything I said there I’m just gonna paste my remarks I made on their FB page, on here…
- - -
I agree with many commenters here that the 61-74 timeline has been covered in detail many times, and for this to be the masterpiece we all hope it will be, it needs to go further and dig deeper!
For this to be a worthy addition to the lineup of already great docs we have (American Band, EH, IJWMFTT, Imagination, Beautiful Dreamer, Doin It Again, LPR) it should be balanced in its coverage of the entire saga.
With that said, I LOVE hearing about the band’s classic surf hit era, and it shouldn’t be neglected, I just think an equal amount of screen time should be devoted to the other eras and aspects of the band!!
I wanna hear about the band politics from each perspective, the 70’s-90’s/2012 albums (and eras), the post-Carl “Mike & Bruce” years, C50, and have an equal spotlight on all the members.
A lot of people think the Disney association will mean that the filmmakers shy away from sensitive or “inappropriate” subject matters. But I think if Get Back showed us anything, it’s that Disney isn’t afraid of these music docs including some adult content. Lennon was clearly high as a kite for the majority of Get Back, which the filmmakers didn’t exactly try to hide — going as far as to include a scene where Lennon directly tells the camera how stoned he was.
I’m positively optimistic that this will indeed be the definitive documentary on America’s Band. Especially given that they are promoting the fact that all nine members will be represented.
I will say that I really adore and cherish American Band and EH. It might be hard to top those, but I believe they can.
I’m genuinely so excited. Ever since I became a BBs fan (around 2013) I have prayed the band would someday receive what I call “The Beatles treatment” or “The Elvis treatment” where they are constantly heavily promoted through new archival releases, films, books, merchandise, etc… it seems thanks to Iconic we have finally reached that point, where the public at large sees The BBs as one of the definitive pop forces of all time, like the two artists I previously mentioned, as opposed to the “B tier” oldies band that they’ve unfortunately been lumped in with for the past few decades.
I hope and think that this film, in addition to amazing sets like Feel Flows, and the incredible lineup of musicians in the current touring band who are playing INCREDIBLE concerts, will help restore the bands legacy to where it should be.

AGD, With Stamos playing with the band for essentially four decades now, he’s apart of their journey and story regardless on how we all feel about that.
I know you’re being tongue in cheek, but I’ve gotten that reply from you for mentioning Stamos before, and I’ve seen you reply this to others when he’s brought up, and it can kinda make the person getting that comment feel dumb, or like the substance of what we were actually trying to say is getting disregarded.
I appreciate you and what you do so much. Don’t get me wrong. You’re a legend in these parts. I just think it can come across as hurtful when we all share our opinions and thoughts and for the only response to be nitpicking a Stamos mention. Perhaps it’s on me for being too sensitive about message board comments, but I just wanted to put that out there.
Anyway, I’m so excited for this movie! I think with Disney the band is in good hands. They’ve done a great job with some recent music flicks. It’ll certainly be hard to capture the story of this family/band’s journey over six decades in one documentary, but I am optimistic they can accomplish that well!
