I know this is probably a really stupid idea. But after reading numerous statements by both Mark and Alan about the missing 8-Track master with Carl's lead vocal for Cabinessence, did they throughly check out CAPITOL'S vault? Since the sessions for adding the lead vocals and the final mixdowns were done at Cap's studios on November 20-22, 1968, maybe they were left there. And knowing the way Capitol would store things, they could be in any number of places.
Just a thought.

The missing multitrack for Cabin Essence is on the same 8-track reel as Good Vibrations. It’s not in Capitol’s vault, and it wouldn’t have been left there, as various people have recalled Brian playing the Good Vibrations multi at parties and studios in the 1970s.

Elton John went into incredible detail in an old interview about Brian playing it for him. As I said, it was a stupid idea of mine.

That's right. One of the Iowa musicians that Brian worked with in 1973 (on Shyin Away, etc) told me that Brian wanted to bring the Good Vibrations tape over from California and play it at their studio.
That 8-track, which includes everything the Beach Boys worked on at Columbia from June-December of 1966, is the biggest holy grail of missing tapes. Most of the final multitracks for Smile were on there. The old story of Columbia chopping it up is impossible, because they obviously continued working on some of the tracks, including at Capitol in late 1968. What exists in the vault is a botched safety copy from after the 20/20 sessions (could've been made any time between late 1968 and 1971), with tracks 5-8 completely blank. Maybe a patching error. That's why we have SOME of the final vocals for Good Vibrations, Wonderful, Cabin Essence, Child is Father of the Man, etc. but not all.
I've wondered if it's in Marilyn's possession, as Brian was clearly keeping it at Bellagio in the 70s, and her tape inventory has never been properly searched/catalogued for Beach Boys material. But it's not in the Beach Boys' vault, not at Capitol, and it certainly wasn't destroyed by Columbia.

I always worry someone came over to Brian's and walked out with it.

There are lots of horrifying possibilities when it comes to missing tapes. I try not to think of them, for the sake of my mental health.

I remember them saying around the time of the Smile box that they checked around lots of people involved with Brian at the time when auditioning material, surely she would have been close at hand for that.

Brian's story from his first book WOULDN'T IT BE NICE. We all know that problems with this tome, so take it for what it is worth.
Brian says he plays the master tracks. That could be the backing tracks (which are in the vault on an 8-Track safety) or the numerous tracking sessions tapes. It doesn't mean its the 8-Track master with vocals.

He would be talking about the final 8-track there. In other interviews, he’s remembered which tracks the theremin and tambourine were on, and those were only on that now missing 3rd generation master, not anything earlier. So clearly he was playing it enough to be familiar with it. The safety copy that exists is just a partial copy (mono backing track, cello, theremin, and 1 of the 4 vocal tracks, would be a weird thing to show off) and those tapes posted above are session tapes, with mostly unused sections.

Not in my time with the archive. Can’t speak for before, but I do know Mark and Alan have been through a few of her things. Gimme Some Lovin came from her collection!

Thanks for all of your input. It's like being in a master class! I have heard at least 5-6 hours of GOOD VIBRATIONS sessions over the years, both from multitracks and mono mixdowns (probably done to cut acetates). So few had vocals. Just little background bits and pieces. Nothing more.
