A definite 10. The second Beach Boys album I purchased. I got it cheap (~$20) on eBay - all intact. I have the long poster on the wall in my office. I had discs 2 and 3 in my car CD player for years. (I only switched it out when I received my copy of Feel Flows.) It’s perfect for a long solo road-trip.
I had never listened to Smiley Smile before I heard “Vegetables”, “Wonderful” and “Wind Chimes” on this set. Imagine my horror when I heard the versions of those songs on SS. Probably why I can’t stand to listen to that album to this day.

Luckily I'd bought SS 35 years before buying GV30 -- and happily could appreciate both versions of everything!

Here is the Billboard story about this release. Just came across it in one of my old backup folders. Forgot I had it.
Fascinating pick-up from Davd Leaf about the reaction to GV’s early live performance - in contrast to the lack of anticipation. I really like that track. Something about presenting what we now know as a classic for the first time. They were still finding their way playing the tune, but its SUCH a piece of history.

And somehow it does not seem to be always backwards-compatible.

I find Smiley brings out the kookiness of the Smile songs, which was always there just shaded by Smile’s grand layers of instrumentation. And Smiley continues Brian’s “feels” music but takes it in myriad directions, so perhaps a fair bit of backward compatability. Polar opposites hewn from a single lode stone.

A good song can be performed with a single guitar and vocal, or piano and vocal, for instance as a demo. Compared to Smile, Smiley Smile sounds like an album of demos.

Smiley Smile has far more humour in it than SMiLE, at least in the format first prescribed by BWPS. You have to go to fan mixes for the skits and generally goofing around that was to have been such a big part of the project.
